Jacob Grimm. Über Diphthonge nach weggefallnen Consonanten. Vorgelesen in der Akademie der Wissenschaften am XI Dec. 1845. Berlin: Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1845. First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author on the verso of the front wrapper to historian and philologist Heinrich Leo: "Herr Prof. Leo / freundschaftlich von Jac. Grimm." A two-line note by Grimm in the fore-edge margin of page 39 references Leo's work. Quarto (10.4375 x 8.625 inches; 265 x 220 mm.); gatherings A and I in two, with I presumably lacking two final blank leaves. [ii], 64 pages. Later dark red half-morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards; spine ruled in black and gilt with five raised bands; boards ruled in blind; edges sprinkled black; front wrapper bound in; flyleaves. Board edges worn; spine ends and corners lightly worn; very short round tear to the leather in the third compartment down near the rear joint, causing a small flap. Hinges strengthened at an early date (likely when rebound); endpapers curling slightly; light wear to the tore-edge of both flyleaves. Near fine. Jacob Grimm is singularly remembered in popular culture as a folklorist for his collection of fairy tales, Kinder- und Hausmärchen, compiled with his brother Wilhelm, but he also made significant contributions to the field of linguistics.
