DescriptionHorace Walpole. Fugitive Pieces in Verse and Prose. [London]: Strawberry Hill, 1758. First edition, first state of text. With the rare inserted leaf.
Small octavo. vi, 219, [1, blank] pages. With engraved title-vignette and one illustration, as issued. Also with the rare inserted leaf, (a "Note" about the Countess of Desmond's picture) inserted at rear. The blank leaf after the Contents page is missing (as usual). Bound in near contemporary full calf, gilt board edges. Rebacked to style in modern calf with modern red gilt morocco lettering label. Boards somewhat worn, free endleaves and first (binder's) blank re-inserted and tipped onto the inner margin of the title-page (with no loss of image or text) and the final (blank) page. Text somewhat toned, foxed, with some thumbsoil. With a nineteenth-century neat ink notation about this copy coming from the library of Edward Ingram (on the front free endpaper), and the bookplate of Thomas Francis Bayard (1828-1898, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and Ambassador to the United Kingdom). Overall, a very good copy.
