    Herman Melville. The Piazza Tales. New York: Dix & Edwards / London: Sampson Low, Son & Co., 1856. First edition. Twelvemo. [2, blank], [iv], [1]-431, [1, blank], [7, ads], [1, blank] pages. Original brown cloth, boards blind-ruled and blind-stamped with central motif, spine stamped in gilt. Light yellow endpapers. Boards moderately rubbed, spine slightly cocked, corners showing a bit, upper corner of rear board and both lower corners bumped, cloth a bit frayed on spine ends. Text block lightly toned, bookplate on front pastedown, small open tear on front pastedown, blind-stamp on upper corners of front free endpaper and front flyleaf, a few places over-opened, text block starting to split at page 240-241, occasional thumbprints and soiling, signs of staining in outer margins of pages 20-41 with no effect to text. A very good copy of Melville's short stories. BAL 13669.
