    Herman Melville. The Piazza Tales. New York: Dix, Edwards, 1856. First edition. The signature mark "14" is absent and the copy has yellow endleaves (no priority, as per BAL). Publisher's full purple cloth, boards decoratively stamped in blind, spine stamped in gilt. This copy recased, with repairs to joints and hinges. Cloth spine sunned, some edgewear and rubbing to binding, lower front boards bumped, front hinge a bit damaged, some edgewear to free endpapers, text a bit toned. Still, a very good copy. Chemised in slipcase. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

    This collection of short stories contains some of Melville's most famous writings, Including Benito Cereno, and his most famous short story, Bartleby.
