    More Information:

Herman Melville. The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade. New York: Dix, Edwards & Co., 1857. First edition. In the rare original red cloth.

Octavo. vi, 394, [2, blank] pages. With the correct first printing imprint ("Miller & Holman") on the copyright page. In the rare publisher's full red cloth, covers decoratively ruled and stamped in blind, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, yellow endleaves. Spine browned and chipped, front joint tearing, a tear beginning on the rear joint (yet still solid), binding worn and soiled, endleaves foxed and thumbsoiled. Still, a good copy.

This was the last novel published in Melville's lifetime (it is interesting to note that he died 34 years after the publication of this, which testifies to his obscurity in the nineteenth-century).

    BAL 13670.
