Description

    First Edition of Melville's Pierre,
    One of His Rarest Novels

Herman Melville. Pierre; or the Ambiguities. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1852. First edition. Octavo. viii, 495, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's purple cloth, boards elaborately paneled in blind, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, dark brown coated endleaves. Spine sunned and worn, some wear, soiling and bumping to boards, endleaves damaged (with wear and evidence of sticker removal), text dampstained, foxed and with ink numeral on page [1]. Shaken, with binding cords visible in several places. Still, a good copy of this rare book. This book, published a year after Moby Dick, was a critical and commercial failure - as such, many unsold copies (being the bulk of the print run) were in the Harper warehouse during the 1853 fire - with only an estimated 110 copies surviving.
