    Description

Herman Melville. Moby-Dick; or, The Whale. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. First U. S. edition. Octavo (7 x 4.625 inches; 176 x 115 mm.). xxiii, [1, blank], 634, [1, epilogue], [1, blank] pages (note: lacking publisher's ads). Recent calf, spine ruled in gilt with five raised bands and three red leather spine labels; all text block edges trimmed; endpapers contemporary to binding. Ex-library copy, with stamps at head of title-page and three interior pages, along with some holograph inked markings; text block gently dulled with age, particularly along edges, which are softened and also exhibit some staining and soiling; staining, spot-soiling, and soft creasing scattered fairly consistently throughout; chunk torn out of fore-edges of two final leaves of "Extracts," about an inch deep and 2.5 inches long, one resulting in repaired tear extending majority of way across page, one with paper repair. Still, a very good copy of one of the high spots of American literature. Contains the "Epilogue" omitted from the true first edition, published in England shortly before the first U. S. edition made its appearance. BAL 12664; DLB ("Melville's acknowledged magnum opus").
