First edition, colonial issue on wove paper, title leaf printed entirely in black, publishing date in Arabic numerals; Lytton Strachey's copy. Octavo. [2, inserted title leaf], 310, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's third binding, greenish-blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, arrangement of nine tulips stamped in blind on front board, publisher's device stamped in blind on rear board; top and bottom edge of text-block rough-trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed. Backstrip faintly dulled, spine ends light worn, sporadic mild soiling, corners softly bumped; occasional over-opening, free endpapers discolored; Strachey's bookplate and ownership signature. An attractive, very good copy. The first book appearance of The Turn of the Screw. Lytton Strachey was an English critic and biographer and member of the Bloomsbury Group. BAL 10633.
