Henry James' First Book, from the Library of John Quinn

Henry James. A Passionate Pilgrim, and Other Tales. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875.

First edition of the author's first book. Octavo. 496 pages.

Publisher's first issue binding of green cloth with gilt spine titles and double-ruled blind-stamping to the boards, and with the "J. R. Osgood & Co" imprint at the foot of the spine. Beveled edges. Brown endpapers. Moderate wear and soiling to the boards. Corners lightly scuffed. Hinges just a touch tender. Front flyleaf before the title page lacking (as it was when Quinn owned it). Faint dampstain to lower margin of most leaves, not approaching the text. A few scattered instances of foxing or thumbsoiling. Overall, a very good copy, with famed collector John Quinn's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown.

Henry James's first book, collecting six stories previously published, mostly, in the Atlantic Monthly.
