First edition, mixed early state, without the list of errata in Volume I and with some errata still uncorrected throughout. Six twelvemo volumes. With both final blanks present in Volumes I and III. Contemporary full calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, spines double-ruled in gilt in compartments, burgundy morocco gilt lettering labels. Spines and joints chipped and worn (some boards nearly detached), boards worn, bookplates of Ham Court (common name of Brampton Castle). A very good set. The Jean Hersholt copy, with his bookplate inside the lined book-backed clamshell case which houses the set. "One of the three most perfect plots ever penned" (Coleridge). Cross III, pages. 316-317.
