    More Information:

Fielding, Henry (1707-1754), author and magistrate. "Fielding's association with Ralph and Cooke, both of whom were freethinkers in religion, squares as well with his own flirtation with deism at this time, an attitude apparent in Pasquin (1736) in the characterization of Firebrand, the hypocritical priest who murders Common Sense." [ODNB]

The uproar caused by this play caused the government to close all theaters in London (except Covent Garden and Drury Lane) and pass the Stage Licensing Act which enabled censors to prohibit the staging of Fielding's plays.

In this edition Fielding's name on the title page is separated from the title by one horizontal rule, and from the imprint by two horizontal rules.         ESTC t89781. Cross, III, 299. Nicoll, II, p. 328. Rothschild 840.
