Henry David Thoreau. Walden; Or, Life in the Woods. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1854. First edition. Octavo (7 x 4.375 inches; 179 x 112 mm.). 357, [3, blank] pages; title-page vignette and lithographic map map inserted opposite page 307, with imprint S. W. Chandler & Bro; publisher's eight-page catalog, dated September 1854 (BAL determining no priority), inserted between rear endpapers. Publisher's brown, vertically ribbed cloth, boards ruled and decoratively stamped in blind; spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt; yellow endpapers, flyleaves. Front part of spine very gently leaning; cloth only lightly worn at boards; the discreetest of repairs to the bottom of the spine. Rubber stamp to title-page (slightly obscuring printed title); occasional minor over-opening, most severe in twelfth gathering; endpapers faintly foxed, with some occasional light foxing throughout; few small splashes to later leaves. A sharp, very good copy, with only minor, skillful sophistications. BAL 20106. Borst A2.1.a. Grolier, 100 American, 63.
