Harriet Beecher Stowe. Uncle Tom's Cabin. Or, Life Among the Lowly. Boston: John P. Jewett & Company, 1852. First edition. Two volumes. Octavo. [iii]-x, [13]-312; 322, [2, blank] pages. Three engraved plates inserted in each volume. Publisher's brown cloth, BAL's B binding (no priority), decorative blind-stamping, spines lettered in gilt, fronts with gilt decoration; all text block edges trimmed; cream endpapers. Bindings rather worn; subtle repairs to spine ends of second volume; boards a bit misshapen and heavily rubbed, resulting in some loss to gilt ornaments at front boards; second volume with teacup ring at front board; corners bumped, with boards peeking through. Endpapers a bit soiled, with possible evidence of label removed from front free endpaper. Text blocks softly dulled, particularly at edges; soiling, foxing, minor staining, and evidence of dog-earing scattered throughout interiors; first volume flyleaves foxed. Very good. Housed together in custom book-backed clamshell. BAL 19343.
