    More Information:

Muzio (1496-1576) Italian diplomat, scholar, and writer on subjects from poetry, education, law, and theology. He was variously a courtier of the Emperor Maximilian I, the Duke of Ferrara, and the Duke of Urbino.

Andrea Alciati (1492-1550), perhaps best known today for his work on emblems, was an able lawyer at Milan when he was called to the law chair at Avignon.  His fame grew, and being desired by the kings of France and Spain as well as the eminent dukes of Italy, he professed law at Bourges, Ferrara, Bologna, Milan, and Pavia, and was always generously rewarded for such.  He is credited with the return of eloquence and polite manner into the teaching and writing of legal matters.  Muzio's work on the art of being a gentleman was one of the most famous Renaissance studies of nobility.  "The true foundation of nobility is virtue," wrote Girolamo Muzio in his Gentilhuomo (1571), the handbook he wrote explaining how to acquire it.  As Castiglione's Il Cortegiano makes clear, court culture raised the cultivation of virtue to a high art.  It was this refined, courtly conception of virtue, not the traditional Christian concept of virtue, that gave rise to the early modern ideal of virtuosity."
