The First English Language Edition of the Decameron

Giovanni Boccaccio. The Modell of Wit, Mirth, Eloquence and Conversation, Framed in Ten Dayes, of an Hundred Curious Pieces, by Seven Honourable Ladies, and Three Noble Gentlemen. [Bound Together With:]. Giovanni Boccaccio. The Decameron, Containing an Hundred Pleasant Novels. Wittily Discoursed Betweene Seven Honourable Ladies, and Three Noble Gentlemen. The Last Five Days. London: Printed by Isaac Jaggard, 1620, 1625. First editions, second printing of the first title, and first printing of the second title. Approximately 10.25 x 6.5 inches. Folio. [5], 193, [1]; [14], 187 pages. Finely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe to style in modern full brown morocco, covers stamped in black, spine ruled and tooled in black and lettered in gilt, five raised bands, blind turn-ins. Some very minor rubbing to binding, preliminary leaves of first book have marginal restoration, some margins a bit close, some scattered soiling or foxing in text. Overall a near fine copy of these desirable titles.

The first translation into English, sometimes ascribed to John Florio, of one of the greatest books in all literature, and a work to which countless authors are indebted. These works were printed on the same presses and are contemporary with Shakespeare's First Folio. The five year delay in the issuance of the second volume has never been completely explained, but by the time it was ready, the first printing of the first volume had been exhausted, and a new printing produced. There was no comparable second printing of the second volume. Pforzheimer 72, 71b. STC 3172, 3173.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
