    Publisher's full dark brown cloth with gilt spine titles. Black endpapers. Housed in a brown leather-backed drop down box with gilt titles. Minor wear and a few spots to the binding. Corners bumped. Hinges starting, with the bottom of the front hinge a bit tender. Bookplate of Hilda Wilkinson Bartlett affixed to the front pastedown. Contents clean. A very good presentation copy.

    Herman Charles Merivale was a poet, author, and civil servant in Victorian England who wrote farces and burlesques for the theater. His literary circle included Meredith, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Anthony Trollope, Gilbert & Sullivan, and others.
