    Presentation copy of the new edition. Inscribed and signed "To Herman Merivale, / from his brother in the craft George M" at the top of the title page. Octavo. vi, 398 pages.

    Publisher's full dark brown cloth with gilt spine titles. Black endpapers. Housed in a brown leather-backed drop down box with gilt titles. Minor wear and a few spots to the binding. Corners bumped. Hinges starting, with the bottom of the front hinge a bit tender. Bookplate of Hilda Wilkinson Bartlett affixed to the front pastedown. Contents clean. A very good presentation copy.

    Herman Charles Merivale was a poet, author, and civil servant in Victorian England who wrote farces and burlesques for the theater. His literary circle included Meredith, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Anthony Trollope, Gilbert & Sullivan, and others.
