Herman Charles Merivale was a poet, author, and civil servant in Victorian England who wrote farces and burlesques for the theater. His literary circle included Meredith, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Anthony Trollope, Gilbert & Sullivan, and others.
