Appleton & Company, 1870. Quarto. 312 pages. Frontispiece engraved portrait of Goethe and other numerous engraved plates with tissue guards. Bound in full brown leather with blind stamped ornamented borders and decorated gilt titles on both boards, five raised spine bands with gilt title and blind stamped devices in compartments, gilt to board edges, and gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Front board has the additional gilt stamp of "Charles E. Loew". Binding rubbed, small tear on rear board, some scratches and wear to gilt edges. Small pencil bookseller's notes on front fly-leaf, plates with varying degrees of dampstaining some into the image areas, edge wear, small corner bends, foxing and light soiling. Very good.
