Nouvelle edition (second edition of the best critical edition of Rabelais, but the first edition with these fine illustrations). Three quarto volumes. Approximately 9.5 x 7.5 inches. [x], xxxvi, 526; [ii], xxxiv, [3]- 383; [xvi], 218, 150, [20, Table des Matieres, [2, Clef de Rabelais], [13, Table des Matieres], [1, blank] pages. With half-titles. Beautifully illustrated with three fold-out engravings of Rabelais' residence, one fold-out map, and sixteen full-page engravings by Picart, Tanje, and Bernaerts (including engraved title-pages , portrait, and frontispiece portrait), and with numerous engraved chapter titles, initials, vignettes, and decorative devices throughout. Complete. Finely bound in contemporary full mottled calf, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, burgundy and olive gilt morocco lettering labels, all edges stained red. Some minor wear to bindings, a few hinges just starting, front joint of volume I starting, two spines lightly sunned, a few endleaves with apparent imperfections in the paper, one free endpaper (in volume III) repaired. Armorial bookplate in volume I. A few plates toned, minor occasional foxing in text. Still, a fine example of this lovely set. Brunet IV, 1060. Cohen-de-Ricci, 839-842.
