Frances Trollope. Domestic Manners of the Americans. London: Printed for Whittaker, Treacher, & Co., 1832. First edition. Two octavo volumes (7.75 x 4.75 inches; 197 x 121 mm). Complete with 24 lithographic plates and their original tissue-guards. Period-style full tan calf, simple single-fillet borders rolled in gilt with mandorla cornerpieces and centerpiece stamped in gilt, spine lettered and tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, handmade endpapers. Some minor foxing to a few of the plates and occasional light finger soiling throughout. Overall a very good copy.
Trollope's "minor classic of looking down one's nose" (Streeter) in a simple and clean, period-style binding. The conservative Trollope -- a Tory through-and-through -- thought democracy was an inherently flawed concept, and during her trip to North America she found Americans in general to be profoundly lacking in social graces and education, and far too fueled with the evangelical spirit of the Second Great Awakening. As a result of her criticism and sometime snarky tone, Domestic Manners was a controversial but highly popular work, lambasted by many American readers but also celebrated by others including Mark Twain, who thought Trollope's observations of Antebellum America were right on target.
