Ernest Hemingway. Men Without Women. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First edition of Hemingway's second collection of short stories, first printing, on heavy stock, weighing 15.875 ounces, and with a perfect "3" in the pagination on page 3 of the text. Octavo (7.4375 x 5.1875 inches; 189 x 132 mm.). [12], 232, [4, blank] pages. Original smooth black cloth with gold paper labels printed in black on front cover and spine. Top edge stained orange. Yellow endpapers with three deeper yellow bands centered with the silhouette of a charging bull within a circle. In the original unclipped first printing dust jacket, with three plain orange bands across the front panel. Spine extremities and corners just a little rubbed; spine label with slight vertical scuff mark; front cover label with a tiny blister and rubbing at top edge; small slight scuff mark on front cover near label; tiny indentation on rear cover; top edge with a few minor scuff marks or adhesions, resulting in a few leaves with tiny edge dings or nicks. The center two leaves of several gatherings with a slight diagonal crease in the upper margin, sometimes entering the text and affecting a few letters; a few leaves roughly opened; upper corner of fly-title (preliminary pages [11/12] and following leaf (pages 1/2 of text) poorly trimmed, becoming over-opened between pages 100 and 101; a few small faint marginal stains. Small bookseller's ticket at top of rear pastedown. Jacket with only light wear and soiling; a few small chips at top and bottom of spine and flap folds; spine darkened slightly and rubbed, with a small abraded area at lower edge; scratch mark across the spine, visible on the verso; front panel with a small scuff mark; five-eighths-inch tear at lower edge of rear panel and slight crease where a small piece was folded up. A beautiful copy, in near fine condition, with only minor flaws. Housed in a black cloth chemise and slipcase, each lined with blue felt. Cohn, pages 29-30; Hanneman A7a.
