DescriptionEnos Hitchcock. Memoirs of the Bloomsgrove Family... Boston: 1790. First edition. One of the two volumes of this set previously owned by an ancestor of the famous political Bush family.
Two octavo volumes. 299, [1, blank]; 300 pages. A married set, with volume II being slightly taller. Contemporary full (not matching) calf. Volume I rebacked to style (again, not completely matching the original spine of volume II) in brown morocco. Red gilt morocco lettering labels (volume II's is contemporary), spines ruled and numbered in gilt. Bindings somewhat worn (although volume I is a bit more worn), new endleaves in volume I, title-page in volume I neatly trimmed at top (no loss of text), embossed stamps of the Library Company on title-page and final leaf in volume I, title-page of volume I with a few tears, text in volume I toned, dampstained and foxed, text in volume II also toned. Generally good. Housed in later custom-built cloth clamshell case. This epistolary novel (one of only two written by Hitchcock) was intended to demonstrate the proper methods of raising children (especially girls). Hitchcock had known George Washington, and even dedicated this novel to Martha Washington.
Volume II inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Lucy Prescott Fay's/Presented to her by her friend/Mr. Azor G. Archibald/June 1796" and with her signature on page [iii]. There are words crossed out on the front free endpaper and on the title-page. Lucy's brother, Samuel Prescott Phillips Fay (1778-1856) is a direct ancestor to President George H. W. Bush.
