First Edition of Edgar Allan Poe with Hand-Colored Plates

Edgar Allan Poe. The Conchologist's First Book: or, A System of Testaceous Malacology. Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1839. First edition, first issue. Twelvemo. 156 pages. With twelve hand-colored plates illustrating 215 shells. Publisher's pictorial paper over boards, recased in modern quarter leather. Boards worn and soiled. Contents with moderate foxing, else all things considered, a very good copy. Poe took the "liberty" of editing Thomas Brown's The Conchologist's Text-Book and adding a preface to it. The second edition omitted Poe's name altogether. Housed in a custom quarter leather clam-shell box. BAL 16131.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
