Edgar Allan Poe. Tales of Mystery and Imagination. Illustrated by Harry Clarke. New York: Tudor Publishing Co., 1933. First American edition thus. Quarto. 412 pages. Eight tipped-in color plates (including frontispiece) and twenty-four black-and-white plates, all by Harry Clarke; tail-pieces. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt with gilt decorative vignette, pictorial paper label at front; text block edges trimmed, top edge stained black; black endpapers; original illustrated dust jacket; housed in publisher's box with pictorial paper label on lid. Minimal shelf wear at extremities of binding; some smudges of pale soiling to boards, most pronounced at rear. Previous owner bookplate affixed to front free endpaper, appears to have had another bookplate pasted over it and then removed. Occasional spot of thumbsoiling or corner rumple to interior pages; a few color plates with creased corners. Jacket lightly rubbed, with wear around edges resulting in some nicking at spine and flap fold ends and a small chip along lower edge of rear panel; single tear extending down from head of rear panel fold about 2.5 inches; verso unevenly tanned from exposure to binding. Box rubbed and showing a fair amount of wear; some mild soiling to pictorial panel on lid, with a couple of small nicks at head. Very good overall.
