First edition, state of text with page 213 correctly numbered and hyphen at the end of the sixth line from the bottom appears in place, the "i" in "ing" on the thirteenth line from the bottom is just barely below the line. Two volumes; twelvemo in sixes (7.5625 x 4.375 inches; 192 x 111 mm.). 243, [1, blank]; iv (advertisements), 222, 223-228 (appendix) pages. Publisher's purple muslin, printed paper labels affixed to spines; all edges trimmed; Volume I front endpapers and rear pastedown replaced (lacking rear free endpaper and both flyleaves); Volume II original plain endpapers and flyleaves. Volume I text block apparently reattached to the casing with the top edge flush with the top of the boards. Backstrips dulled, spine labels worn (almost completely perished on the first volume); covers rubbed with some spotting and faint staining; board edges lightly worn with some minor fraying; corners bumped. Text lightly foxed, slightly more so in the first volume; faint tidemark from the gutter out on the preliminary leaves of Volume I with another light dampstain from the fore-edge in on the following leaves; rear hinge of the second volume cracked; original endpapers somewhat toned. Good; housed in a custom morocco pull of top box by Riviere and Son. BAL 16133.
