    Description

Clement C[larke]. Moore, LL.D. Poems. New York: Bartlett & Welford, 1844. First edition with the first book appearance of Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas," commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas." Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "To Miss Maria James, / from her friend / the author. / Jan. 1845." Small octavo (7.25 x 4.5 inches; 184 x 114 mm.). 216 pages. Publisher's original brown paper-covered boards, printed paper label on spine. Spine browned; binding worn; joints starting, especially the front joint (yet, still solid); some soiling to binding; rear board dampstained (dampstain also on rear endleaves); front free endpaper and front and rear blanks lacking; hinges cracking; overopened in a few places; text toned and moderately thumbsoiled. Still, a very good copy. "A Visit from St. Nicholas" appears on pages 124-127. BAL 14348. Marshall 27. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

More Information: Much of our modern concept of Santa Claus comes from Moore's poem (here appearing on pages 123-127). Although Moore wrote this poem for his children in 1822 (and it was published in the Troy Sentinel in the following year), it did not see print in book form until years later, whereupon it became one of the most famous and beloved poems in American Literature.
