    More Information:

Claudius Claudianus (d. ca. A.D. 404), a Greek speaking Alexandrian, came to Italy sometime before 395 and eventually became court poet under the Emperor Honorius and the spokesman of his minister, Stilicho.  He is the last notable representative of the classical tradition in Latin poetry, and as attested to by his own predilection as well as the testimonies of Augustine and Orosius, he was a staunch pagan.  His works were highly influential during the Renaissance, and bore more than a passing mark upon Spencer's Faerie Queene.
