    Charles Dickens. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. With Forty-Three Illustrations, by R. Seymour and Phiz [and R. W. Buss]. London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. First edition; mixed issue points as per Smith (three of seven early issue points (including: page 341, line 1; page 342, line 5, and page 432, headline); includes the suppressed Buss plates in the first state. Bound from original parts, with one wrapper and four pages of ads inserted at rear. Modern green morocco by Sawyer, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Some minor rubbing to binding, occasional thumbsoiling and foxing in text. Near fine. Smith I, 3; Hatton & Cleaver, p. 20. [Together with:] Charles Dickens. Autograph Letter Signed. Tavistock House: "Thursday the Fourth March 1859." One octavo leaf, recto only (6.5 x 4.5 inches; 168 x 112 mm.). On light blue Tavistock House stationery. Two vertical creases, some thumbsoiling and minor wear, bottom margin trim is slightly slanted. Very good. Letter text available online.

    More Information: "Sir / My occupations oblige me, / in answer of your note, to entreat / that you will have the kindness to / communicate your business to me / in writing, in the first instance. I / assure you that I have not leisure / of making appointments of a general / kind with the incredible numbers / of correspondents who do me the / honor to propose them. / Faithfully yours / Charles Dickens."
