    Description

Charles Dickens. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. With forty-three illustrations, by R. Seymour and Phiz [and R.W. Buss]. London: Chapman and Hall, 1837 [i.e., April 1836-November 1837]. First edition, later issue of text for parts I-X, first issues of parts XI-XIX/XX (wrappers of parts III-IX, XI later issue, the rest are first issue), in the original monthly parts, twenty numbers bound in nineteen parts. Octavo (8.75 x 5.5 inches; 227 x 143 mm.). Forty-three inserted engraved plates, including frontispiece and vignette title-page, with the original plates by Seymour and Buss. Parts I through X, XII-XIII lacking all "Advertisers," ads or slips, "Advertiser" in part XIX/XX lacks pages 17 to 24. Laid-in part XVII is a slip: "Sam Weller's Scrap Sheet," uncalled-for by Hatton and Cleaver. Original green printed wrappers designed by Seymour. Most wrappers rebacked or with expert paper repairs to spines; part VII with restoration to front wrap. Some light foxing and edge-browning to plates; ownership signatures on most issues; some wear with occasional minor paper loss at the corners and soiling in text, but overall, a good set. See online extended description for detailed plate information. Housed in cloth clamshell case. Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 3-88.
