    Pickwick Bound from Parts, with the Suppressed Plates by Buss

    Charles Dickens. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. With Forty-Three Illustrations, by R. Seymour and Phiz. London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. First edition, bound from the parts. Second issue of text. With the first state of the frontispiece and engraved title. Octavo. xiv, 609 pp. With forty-two (of forty-three) inserted plates by Seymour, Buss and "Phiz' (plate 29, page 358 is missing). With the Seymour and suppressed Buss plates, and with the "Phiz" plates in mixed state, but mainly early steels. Contemporary full brown calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine tooled in gilt, black gilt morocco lettering label, four raised bands, gilt board edges, blank turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Binding worn (especially at joints), boards scuffed, hinges barely starting, text and plates toned and somewhat foxed. Armorial bookplate. Wrappers from part II bound-in at rear. A good copy, with the rare suppressed plates.
