David Copperfield in Original Parts

Charles Dickens. The Personal History of David Copperfield. With Illustrations by H. K. Browne. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. First edition in the original monthly parts, twenty numbers bound in nineteen. Octavo. [i-vii]viii[ix]x-xii[xiii]xiv[xv-xvi], [1]2-624 pages. Forty inserted plates by H.K. Browne ("Phiz"). Original green printed wrappers. Some rebacking and restoration to wrappers; a few ownership signatures on some front wrappers. Some toning, minor soiling, or wear to wrappers. Plates browned and foxed. Part IV lacking first leaf of "Advertiser" and with several additional leaves of "Advertiser" not called-for. Part VII lacks the Punch slip. Part VIII lacks the 12-page "Advertiser", and the rare Letts fold-out ad, but has seven diary leaf samples from the Letts ad and an un-called-for ad in front ("New Illustrated Work by John Leech"). Parts XII, XIII and XVIII lack the 8-page "Advertiser". Part XIV lacks the front slip. Part XIX/XX lacks the final leaf of "Advertiser" and the Douglas Jerrold slip, with several cracked gutters. Still, a good Copperfield overall - one of the rarer titles in parts. Housed in custom-build full blue morocco gilt clamshell case. Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 253-272. From the collection of Alexander J. Jemal, Jr.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
