    First Edition of David Copperfield

Charles Dickens. The Personal History of David Copperfield. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. First book edition, first printing. Octavo. [iii]-xiv, 624 pages. Bound without half-title. Forty plates by Phiz. Bound in contemporary full purple morocco, covers double-ruled in gilt and paneled in gilt and blind, spine tooled and lettered in gilt and ruled in blind in compartments, five raised bands, gilt turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Spine a bit sunned, some rubbing, soiling, and mild wear to binding, plates somewhat foxed. With the bookplate of Caroline Janetta, Countess of Essex, warmly inscribed (in her hand?) to Richard H. Hutton, Esq. With a small ticket in the upper corner of the front pastedown. A very good copy. It is possible that the recipient of this book was Richard H. Hutton (1826-1897), an English journalist who wrote extensively about literature and religion. Eckel, p. 77. Smith, I:9. From the collection of Alexander J. Jemal, Jr.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
