Charles Dickens. The Mystery of Edwin Drood. London: Chapman & Hall, 1870. First edition in first state binding, lacking publisher's advertisements. Frontispiece portrait of Dickens by J.H. Baker. Vignette title page and twelve illustrations by Samuel Luke Fildes. Publisher's green cloth binding with gilt titles and designs stamped in black on front board and spine, rules and floral shield stamped in black on rear board. Two bookplates "J.H. du Moulin-Browne" and "Henry Bacchus" on front pastedown. Binding rubbed and soiled, spine darkened, corners and edge bumps, boards slightly bowed, spine ends with tears, fraying, and minor losses. Textblock shaken with splits between page 1 and "The Dawn Plate"; and between pages 178 and 179, in both cases exposing spine, adjacent pages coming loose, frontispiece coming loose, adhesive applied to plate gutters including the title page, over-opened pages. Small paper lift on "The Dawn Plate". Foxing and occasional soiling. Good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
