Charles Dickens. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. With Illustrations by Phiz. London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. First edition, in the original twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts (April 1838-October 1839). Octavo (8.75 x 5.5 inches; 225 x 142 mm.). Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by Finden from a painting by D. Maclise and thirty-nine etched plates by and after H. K. Browne ("Phiz"). The text is a mixed issue, without the misprint "visiter" for "sister" on page 123, line 17, in Part IV, but with the misprint "latter" for "letter" on page 160, line 6 up, in Part V. Original bluish green wrappers printed in black with a design by "Phiz" on the outside front wrappers. Wrappers generally worn and soiled with occasional chipping, all but three wrappers have brown paper reinforcement on upper front wrappers. Several front wrappers with near-contemporary ink stamps. Some repairs/restoration to spines, as is common. A nearly complete set with the following omissions: part I lacks the front ads (for which are substituted ten pages of later ads); part II, the Mechi's catalogue in the rear lacks the final leaf and rear wrapper; part III, lacks the eight-page "Amesbury's Patent Supports" ad in the rear; part VIII lacks the two- page Tyas ad in the rear, but laid-in is a one page Pocock ad; part XI lacks the Tilt slip (not always called-for); part XVII lacks two-page Tyas ad in rear; part XIX/XX lacks the one-page "Hill's Seal Wafers" ad in the rear. Plate 16 in part VIII is the first or second steel; plate 29 is the first steel. Overall, a good set. Chemised in brown cloth slipcase. Hatton and Cleaver pp. 129-160.Auction Info

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
