Frontispiece, vignette title-page and thirty-eight additional inserted plates. Publisher's original diagonal-grain blue cloth; front and back stamped in blind; spine stamped in blind and gilt. Light yellow endpapers. Edges rough-trimmed. In custom turquoise cloth slipcase. Minor shelf wear at extremities of binding; very light bumping to corners and back fore-edge; spine and edges of boards faintly toned; repairs to front and back inner hinges just visible from exterior; some mild dark soiling to boards; small whitish splash at fore-edge of front board, a bit to back board. Slight softening to corners and edges of text block. Tiny chip out of fore-edge of front free, out of top of back free endpapers. Brown spotting to frontispiece and inserted title-page; less spotting to some other plates, with slight toning to edges. Light wear to extremities of slipcase. Evidence of dog-earing throughout text block. Former owner inscriptions to front endpapers. Near fine. With transposed "£" on engraved title-page, confirming first issue. Fourteen-line errata leaf.
