Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, Successors to Carey & Co., 1839. First single-volume illustrated American edition. Two volumes. Octavo. Various paginations. Pickwick has two inserted engraved title-pages and eighteen additional inserted plates. Oliver Twist has frontispiece and twenty-three additional inserted plates. Both in publisher's cloth with spines stamped in gilt. All edges trimmed. Both housed in custom beige cloth clamshells with brown (Oliver Twist) and blue (Pickwick) leather spine labels stamped in gilt. Mild shelf wear to bindings, particularly at edges, corners and hinges, with some loss of cloth to extremities of Pickwick spine; regular fading to spines and board margins, more pronounced on Oliver Twist; some light soiling to boards of both volumes, with two small gouges to front board of Pickwick. Edges of text block, especially Pickwick, slightly darkened. Light yellowing to plates; some offsetting on pages facing illustrations. Pickwick foxed throughout interior of text block. Both volumes have faint vinegary odor. Gift bookplate on front pastedown of Oliver Twist. Fair to good. Inserted publisher's ads in both volumes. Gimbel A23, A31; Wilkins pp. 8, 15.
