    Description

Charles Dickens. Pair of Books Comprising Master Humphrey's Clock. London: 1841. First separate editions.

More Information: Charles Dickens. The Old Curiosity Shop. A Tale. London: Chapman and Hall, 1841. First independent octavo edition. [Together with:] Barnaby Rudge. A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty. London: Chapman and Hall, 1841. First independent octavo edition. Two volumes. Large octavo. Various paginations (particularly odd in these two volumes as they were printed directly from stereotype plates of Master Humphrey's Clock, where these two novels were previously gathered). In-text illustrations. Original brown publisher's cloth; fronts and backs stamped in blind; spines stamped in blind and gilt. Endpapers and edges of text block marbled. Old Curiosity Shop is a binding variant--front and back stamps different from Barnaby Rudge. Housed in custom brown cloth slipcases. Spines and some board margins faded to light brown; slight shelf wear to cloth; bumping to corners and board edges. Some splashing to top rear board of Old Curiosity Shop; small white and black splatters to rear board of Barnaby Rudge. Dust soiling to top edge of text block, toning to other two edges of Barnaby Rudge, with some fading to the marbling. Very infrequent light thumbsoiling to interiors of text blocks. Light wear to extremities of slipcases. Very good. Gimbel A59, A62; Smith 6A, 6B. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.
