Gorgeous nineteenth-century full tree calf binding by Cawthorn & Hutt. Five raised spine bands. Elaborate gilt tooling to spine, with a red leather title plate lettered in gilt. Double-ruled gilt borders on boards with floral stamping and gilt circular corner pieces. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Moderate wear to the boards, with some abrading along the joints, spine, edges and corners. Boards lightly rubbed. Previous ownership signatures to the top of some parts wrappers. "Some copies [of the first book edition of Little Dorrit] may have a nine-line slip tipped in to p. (1) or 481 which discusses the erroneous use of 'Rigaud' for 'Blandois' in Chapter XVII. This slip followed the plates in Part 16 of the monthly issue" (Smith I, p. 93, note 1). From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
