Charles Dickens. Little Dorrit. London: Dec. 1855-June 1857. Original monthly parts, first issue.

More Information: Charles Dickens. Little Dorrit. London: Bradbury & Evans, Dec. 1855-June 1857. Original monthly serial, first issue. Twenty parts in nineteen, octavo. Eight to thirty-two pages of preliminary advertisements; text continuously paginated 1-625; two 16-page publisher's catalogs inserted before text of Parts I and XIII, seven leaves of preliminaries follow text of final part. Frontispiece and thirty-nine additional inserted plates, two per part, seven of which are "dark" plates, by H. K Browne; twelve pairs with original tissue between them. Original blue illustrated paper wrappers. Housed in custom burnt orange clamshell, spine stamped in gilt, with gilt vignette on lid. Most backstrips slightly chipped at head and foot, some repaired, Part XIX/XX rebacked; all lightly soiled, with occasional wear at spine creases. Part I skewed. Regular edge wear to wrappers, some marginal chipping and toning, occasional faint soiling, soft creases and bumping; mended hole at upper edge of Part IV, one or two other parts with small edge tears mended from verso. Inking to upper edge of some front wrappers. Small specks of white soiling to front wrappers of Parts I-II. Plates spotted and browned at edges with offsetting onto tissue or facing page; plates in Part XVIII have small damp stain to upper corners. Front ads partially unopened in Part VII; fourth leaf mostly torn out in Part VIII; third and fourth leaves torn out in Part IX; extra first and last leaf of front ads inserted before plates in Part XIV. Lacking one rear ad or slip each in Parts I, II, XIII, XVI and XVIII. Part IV completely lacking rear ads. Some offsetting from ads. Occasional marginal thumbsoiling to interior of text block; evidence of dog-earing; small gouge to bottom edge of two leaves in Part XVII. Slight shelf wear at extremities of clamshell, rubbing to gilt vignette on front. Good to very good. Part XV reads "Rigaud" instead of "Blandois," a mark of a first issue. Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 307-330. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.
