    More Information:

Charles Dickens. "Great Expectations." [Complete original serials in All the Year Round]. London: Chapman and Hall, December 1860-August 1861. Original serial publication, its first appearance in print. Nine monthly issues bound in two volumes, octavo. 12, [169]-288, 48, [2]; 12, [289]-384, [10]; 8, [385]-480, [4]; [2], 8, [481]-562, [4], 563-72, 24, [8]; 8, [25]-120, [2], 4, [2]; 8, [121]-216; 8, [217]-336, [4]; 8, [337]-432, [2]; 8, [433]-552, [8] pages. Occasional illustrative matter, particularly in advertisements. Journals with original illustrated blue wrappers in fairly contemporary red morocco; fronts and backs ruled in blind with gilt ornaments at hinge; spine decorated and lettered in gilt, with five raised bands. Later endpapers. Red from morocco easily transfers; scuffing to corners and spines; slight shelf wear at edges; some minor scratches, small spots of soiling to boards. Toning to edges of free endpapers. Edge wear to blue wrappers, occasional spots of soiling, foxing, creasing, splashing and chipping; front wrapper of Part 20 has clear tape mend; small hole in front wrapper of Part 22; back wrapper of Part 28 heavily chipped and fragile. Various gatherings across all journals partially or completely unopened; others roughly opened, resulting in tears, ragged edges and chipping. Page 439 (Part 22) soiled, appears to have had something laid in; third leaf mostly torn out of advertisements at front of Part 25. Very good. Yellow slip announcing completion of Great Expectations serial tipped in at front of text in Parts 26 and 27. First appearance of Dickens's novel, published weekly from December 1, 1860 to August 3, 1861 (with an extra Christmas 1860 issue) in All the Year Round, which was edited by Dickens. Four journals bound into first volume, five into the second, Parts 20-28, each containing a month's worth of serials, numbers 84 through 123. Great Expectations opens in issue number 84 and concludes in 119. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
