Description

Dombey and Son in Original Parts with All Plates in Two States

Charles Dickens. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846-48. First edition in the original monthly parts, twenty bound in nineteen. Octavo. [i-xi]xii-xiv[xv]xvi, [1]2-624. Eighty inserted plates (forty plates called-for, however, each plate appears in two states including an engraved plate and a lithographed plate - rare to have all plates bound thus) including frontispieces and vignette titles. Original green printed wrappers. Some spines rebacked or repaired, as usual. A few text leaves with marginal tears. A few wrappers with some restoration. Some minor tiredness at edges. A few parts bear an ownership signature on the front wrapper. Earliest issue of Part IX; later issue of text in Part XI; later issue of XIV, with text corrected. Part III with different issue of the rear wrapper and lacking the four pages of ads before the "Advertiser". Part IV has different ads on pages 7 and 8 of "Advertiser", and this part lacks the two page ad "Cheap and Elegant Christmas-Books", but has an eight page catalogue of books by Orr, not called for. Errata slip called for in Part V is present. Parts VI and VII lacking four page slip in front. Parts IX and X lack the eight-page Gilbert's Dictionary ad. Part XI lacks the Letts slip. Part XIII has later rear wrapper ad, "Advertiser" in XIII has earliest unbroken date. Part XV has fifteen Letts diary leaf specimens, a large number for this part (number of sample leaves varies, as per Hatton and Cleaver). Part XVI wants the front "Punch" slip. Part XVII lacks the eight-page Waterlow & Sons ad. "Advertiser" in XIX/XX complete, though bound out of order; prelims have first state two-line "Errata." Shows very well: a sharp, clean, fresh set. Housed in a custom full blue morocco, elaborately gilt-stamped clamshell case. From the collection of Alexander J. Jemal, Jr.

    More Information:

"Two sets of plates for each of the forty designs were etched by "Phiz." Even so, it was found impossible to print a sufficient number of etchings to supply the demand, and lithographic transfers were therefore made from the steels. Every copy of "Dombey and Son" that was issued in the parts, contained a certain number of these lithographic illustrations, and every complete set of the parts varies as to quantity. From an examination of the 1486 plates, the writer has been able to discover their appearances in eight numbers, viz.: 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 16, 17; but this record is not necessarily complete - more than likely every plate was reproduced by the "litho" process." (Hatton and Cleaver). Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 227-250.
