    Description

Charles Dickens. Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son... London, 1846-1848. First edition in the original parts. From the collection of Judith Adelman.

    More Information:

Charles Dickens. Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son, Wholesale, Retail and for Exportation. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846-1848. First edition in the original parts, twenty parts in nineteen octavo monthly issues, as issued.

Probable later issue with the eight-line errata in part XIX-XX, instead of the two-line version. With forty etched plates by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"). In original printed wrappers. Part I lacks its wrappers and is lacking the first leaf of ads; part V does not have the errata slip which should proceed the plates; part VI lacks the first two pages of the four-page slip inserted at front; part IX lacks the eight-page insert at rear; part XI lacks the first leaf of ads and the rear slip for "Letts, Son & Steer"; part XV has the first leaf of ads mostly missing; part XVII has most of the first leaf of the "Waterlow and Sons" ad torn out; part XIX-XX is lacking the rear wrapper. Some wear, soiling to wrappers, some foxing to text, some toning and foxing to plates. Still, a good set. Housed in cloth clamshell case. From the Collection of Judith Adelman.

This book contains the first use of the so-called "dark plates" ("On the Dark Road", to face page 547) to be used more often in later works. Dombey also has the first use of horizontal etchings on the steel plates ever to be done in a Dickens title.

    Hatton and Cleaver, p. 227.
