Christmas Carol rebacked, preserving the majority of the original spine, some soiling to boards, spine dull, some rubbing to binding. Half-title, front free endpaper, frontispiece, title-page, and Preface all restored at inner margin and re-attached, tape repair to verso of frontispiece, a tear to the upper edge of the title-page, previous owner's neat signature to half-title, bookplate on front pastedown. Chimes with spine repairs, spine worn and lightly chipped, joints torn, binding worn and soiled (especially at spine), free-endpapers re-mounted, several gutters either cracking or overopened. Cricket on the Hearth has a worn and toned spine, front joint with a small tear, some light wear and moderate soiling to boards, hinges just starting, bookseller's ticket on front pastedown, light soiling to endleaves. Battle of Life has torn joints (front joint almost entirely torn), spine toned, boards and spine worn, rear hinge and first gutter cracking, bookplate to front pastedown, bookseller's ticket and minor soiling to rear endleaves, fly-title with ownership signature. Haunted Man spine slightly worn and soiled, light rubbing to binding, hinges cracking. Despite some condition issues, this is a good set, with the earliest possible Christmas Carol. All volumes separately chemised, the entire set housed in a morocco-backed slipcase.
The first edition of A Christmas Carol went on sale December 19, 1843 and by Christmas Eve every copy had sold out. Dickens had written a hugely popular work and, in so doing, created an instant classic. Within weeks of publication eight different stage adaptations of A Christmas Carol were playing in London theatres (Charles Dickens at 200, The Morgan Library & Museum, 2011).
    Smith II, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
