    Description

A Rare Dickens AQS Regarding Little Nell from The Old Curiosity Shop

Charles Dickens. Autograph Quotation Signed, "Charles Dickens", one page, 8.625" x 10.4375", Tremont House, Boston, January 29, 1842. The page is laid into archival mounting corners and matted to an overall size of approximately 10" x 12", suitable for framing.

Here, in his inimitable hand, the great Victorian novelist executes a quote from the climactic scene in his novel, The Old Curiosity Shop. The passage bemoans the death of Little Nell, and reads, in full: "- 'She was dead. No sleep so beautiful and calm, so free from / trace of pain, so fair to look upon. She seemed a creature fresh from the / hand of GOD, and waiting for the breath of life - not one who had / lived and suffered death.' / Charles Dickens [flourish] / Tremont House, Boston. / Twenty-ninth January 1842."

The lines quoted here answered once and for all the question on the lips of every reader who had waited achingly for the final parts issue of the novel, "Is Little Nell alive?" Sadly, no, she wasn't. This beautiful and elegiac quotation about the death of one of the author's more tragic characters is a unique piece of Dickensiana, written by the author only one week after arriving in Boston for his first American reading tour. Dickens AQsS rarely appear at auction, and are among the most desirable autograph material from him. The present example is in very fine condition, with minimal edge-toning. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
