First edition, first issue, with the text uncorrected, "Stave I" as the first chapter heading, red and blue title-page dated 1843, blue half-title and hand-colored green endpapers. Small octavo (6.375 x 4 inches; 164 x 103 mm.). [8], 166, [2, advertisements] pages. Four hand-colored steel-engraved plates (frontispiece and facing pages 52, 78 and 150) by and after John Leech and four wood-engraved text illustrations (on pages 37, 73, 119 and 164) by W. J. Spine gently leaning; backstrip faintly dulled with some light uneven discoloration; spine ends and corners lightly worn with some mild fraying; corners softly bumped; gilt lettering and decorations just slightly worn; front board with some shallow rippling along upper edge and two tiny ink blots; rear board lightly rubbed with a small, faint blemish. Endpapers lightly worn, as usual, with evidence of previous bookplate; occasional faint foxing throughout. Near fine, a bright and unsophisticated copy. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell case. Eckel, pp. 110-115. Smith II, 4. From the Collection of Daniel J. King.
