Period-style full speckled calf, smooth spine ruled and stamped in gilt in compartments, gilt black morocco lettering piece. Contemporary owner's signature on title-page. Toning, light soiling, and a few instances of foxing throughout, mostly marginal. A small stain along the upper fore-edge from leaf I1 to S4. Overall a very good copy.

A handsome copy in a sympathetic binding of the first edition of Brockden Brown's first book.Wieland is the first and arguably most famous American gothic novel, and regarded by many as the first significant novel to be written by an American and published in the United States. Sabin 103888.
