    Tourgee, Novelist and Lawyer, fought in the Northern Army during the Civil War and later went to North Carolina as a carpetbagger, where he eventually served as Superior Court Judge and contributed to the break-up of the Ku Klux Klan. His novels, realistic in background and detail, are drawn from firsthand experience and are particularly marked by an understanding of the problems of African-Americans.
