    More Information:

Pierre de Montmaur (1576-1648) was first a Jesuit in Rome,  then a druggist at Avignon, and after going to Paris, regis professor of Greek, where he also was famous for his anagrams, and puns.

"His constant practice was to ridicule men of learning by satires and sarcasms, frequently making allusions to their names, taken from Greek and Latin, which were called Montmaurisms. Hence a warfare commenced which does not appear to have redounded much to the credit of either party. Among other expedients they accused Montmaur of having killed the porter of the college of Boncourt, on which he was sent to prision, and scarce cleared of this imaginary crime, before they accused him of others more infamous... Various attempts were also made to render him ridiculous. Menage set the fashion by a fictitious 'Life of Montmaur'...[Sallengre's work is] a collection of all the pieces written against that singular character,"[Chalmers]

He is pictured in the satiric pieces as a glutton, inebriate,  sychophant, and "le plus celebre des parasites." Bayle, in a long entry (fun to read), says "this man was not near so contemptible as he is represented. He loved good eating too well, he went to dine with great men oftener than he ought to have done; he talked to them I do not doubt, with too great ostentation. but if his happy memory, if his reading, if his ready wit, had not recommended him, would he have had such access to the chancellor, to the president of Mesmes, and to some other persons eminent for their rank, their good judgment and learning?""

Sallengre has a long introduction on the feud, and gives authors and summaries of all the texts.Included are works by Charles Ferramus, Gilles MŽnage, Adrien de Valois, Sarasin, Dalibray, Guez de Balzac, La Mothe Le Vayer fils, etc.

"Textes d'un grand interer pour la connaissance de moeurs au XVIIe siecle et qui contiennent des renseignements curieux sur la cuisine." [Oberle, Bacchus, 374.] STCN 171508. Cohen-de-Ricci 937.
