    More Information:

Charles Eisen (1720-1778) one of the 'four masters' of French rococo book illustration. "Henri Cohen, who knew the detail of the subject better than anyone else, ranked him second to Moreau only because of the latter's superior range and flexibility, saying that otherwise his illustrations brought together 'the maximum of grace, finish, and perfection. To his mind Eisen 'excelled in voluptuous subjects and knew how to give an inexpressible charm to everything which makes women attractive.' "In the little world of rakes and dandies, there were a number of would-be poets. Beginning in 1763, the Chevalier Dorat, a retired officer of musketeers, persuaded Eisen, as the master of gallant illustration, to adorn his verse pamphlets on erotic themes, usually with a plate, a headpiece, and a tailpiece. Other poetasters like Blin de Sanmore and the Marquis de Pezay followed suit....Thus there came into being a small library of verse epistles, stories, and comedies, which are exampled in the collection of plaquettes..."[Ray, Art of the French Illustrated Book.]

These copies of these plaquettes are on all on the preferable "grande" paper. Sainmore: Cohen-de-Ricci 156. Lewine 69. Gay/Lemonnyer III,802. Mercier: Cohen-de-Ricci 699.
