[William Hogarth, illustrator]. Samuel Butler. Hudibras. London: Printed for C. Bathurst [and 18 others], 1775. Entirely interleaved with blanks.

    More Information:

[William Hogarth, illustrator]. Samuel Butler. Hudibras. In Three Parts. Written in the Time of the Late Wars. Corrected and Amended: With Additions. To which are added, Annotations, and an exact Index to the Whole. Adorned with Cutts, designed and engraved by Mr. Hogarth. London: Printed for C. Bathurst [and 18 others], 1775.

Two twelvemo volumes (7.375 x 4.25 inches; 189 x 108 mm). [2], 401, [17, index] pages, interleaved throughout with blanks. With engraved frontispiece portrait after Jan ven der Gucht, and 16 engraved plates (five of which are folding) after originals by William Hogarth.

Near-contemporary quarter beige calf over marbled boards, smooth spine in six compartments ruled and lettered in gilt; near-contemporary manuscript inscription to upper front pastedowns: "B.D.N. executé à Londres. 1784." A few instances of manuscript annotations in an accomplished cursive hand. Light foxing throughout, as is usually the case. A very good copy.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of this copy of Hudibras is the fact that it was interleaved with blanks in the late eighteenth century, shortly after publication in 1775. Most likely the two volumes were intended for a buyer who wanted to study and annotate Samuel Butler's most famous work (the few manuscript annotations in the second volume comprise definitions of English words, presumably by the French visitor who purchased the volumes in London in 1784); but in some instances in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, printers sent interleaved copies to authors and editors in order that they might make corrections or emendations for a subsequent edition.
