    Dibdin's "Copious Notes" on More's Utopia
    with Copious Extra Engravings

B the Rev. T.F. Dibdin, F.S.A.. London: William Bulmer at the Shakespeare Press, 1808. Unstated limited edition of 150 large paper copies. Quartos. clxxx, 1-30; 31-464 pages. Two volumes with additional engravings, totaling 83 single page, 20 double page, and five fold-out plates. There are portraits of Samuel Johnson, Hans Holbein, Henry VIII, Francis Bacon, Anna Boleyne, Queen Elizabeth, Desiderius Erasmus, John Milton, Aristophanes, Chaucer, William Caxton, and many more; facsimile book title pages, and historic sites. Also present, of course, are multiple images of Sir Thomas More and the portrait of his family in the style of Hans Holbein. Bound in the first volume is a fold-out holograph letter from Dibdin to the binder of these volumes. Three of the plates have been colored: a duplicate image of William Steward (volume one, before page xv), the face of Edward IV (volume two, facing page 105), and the house of Erasmus (volume two, facing page 356). Uniformly bound by Bradstreet's in green morocco with gilt rules and corner fleurons on the covers five raised bands on the spine with title, volume, and fleurons in compartments, "London 1808" in gilt at each foot, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles and floral patterned end papers, stamped in gilt on the lower edge of both front turn-ins "Bound by Bradstreets". Minor shelf wear to boards, light rubbing to corners, small printed sticker of "Anne C. Morrel" on both front pastedowns and her bookplate on the verso of each front free endpaper, volume one pages cxlix-clxix have a small bend in the upper right corner, few unobtrusive holograph pencil notes, pencil check lines to list of authors pages 453 to 458, occasional minor foxing or minor stains, few smudges to plates, clean pages, otherwise a very good set.
